Survey finds advisers embracing ESG investing

Responsible investing is becoming a fast-growing movement within the advice channel, according to a new report.

The proportion of advisers in the last 12 months who said they provide advice on responsible investing has increased markedly from 19 per cent to 34 per cent in the last two years alone, according to Investment Trends' 2018 Adviser Product and Marketing Needs Report.

The report also found the proportion of planners who said they are very familiar with the concept of goals-based investing has risen from 56 per cent to 62 per cent.

"The goals-based investing approach is gaining traction among planners as it helps foster greater planner-client engagement, while at the same time focuses the conversation on their clients' lifestyle goals instead of short-term investment performance," said Investment Trends research director Recep Peker.

"While still early days, planners are also responding to rising consumer interest in investments that incorporate ethical, environmental, social and governance factors. In fact, responsible investing is gaining popularity among planners of all ages, not just Millennials."

The Investment Trends report is based on a survey of 766 financial planners concluded in September 2018.
